Volunteer

JCL Volunteers play an important role in helping to fulfil our vision.  Thank you for considering helping us in this way, we appreciate your interest in, and your enthusiasm for, sharing the gospel with Japanese people!

I'm interested! What's next?

We can offer support roles through work to assist in an administrative capacity, for example by helping with some of our office-based work, as well as roles which will allow you to reach out to Japanese people near where you live, work or spend time.

In order to ensure that we are making the volunteer role as interesting as possible for you, as well as ensuring that we make the best possible use of your skills and aptitudes, we have prepared a form to complete, in which you will be able to let us know where you are able to volunteer, which skills you have and which kinds of role are of interest to you.

For example, if you have IT skills, knowledge of the Japanese language, graphic design capabilities, writing and editing experience, video making and editing aptitudes, etc. then please don't be shy about letting us know!  Even if you can only offer an hour or two here and there, we may still be able to work together and we would like to hear from you.

If you are aged 16 and under, please do let at least one of your parents / guardians know that you are volunteering, as we want to keep everyone informed.

The memories I made with my host family overseas and Bible verses I received from friends in the church there have helped me to continue following Jesus after I returned to Japan.

We are also very keen to hear about any work which you are doing among Japanese people at the moment which we might be able to help you build on or expand, e.g. you may know Japanese students studying at your local college or university, or you may know some Japanese mothers and children in your community whose partners work in manufacturing and office jobs near where you live.

Q: What are the best ways that people overseas can help their Japanese friends before they return home?

We would love to help you build up your activities amongst Japanese people by linking you up with other nearby groups, providing resources such as tracts or other literature and we may also be able to offer training so that you are better equipped to understand Japan and the Japanese.

In particular, if you are willing and able to offer to run or host Bible studies for Japanese people you know or are in contact with, we would be delighted to offer advice about which resources to use and we stock a range of bilingual Bible study materials in our online shop.

A: Accept them warmly. Many of them will be lonely from living in a foreign country. Also, take a lot of time when ministering to them.

I'm interested! What's next?

It can be challenging to explain the gospel to someone from a completely different culture, who also has a different mother tongue! Here are a few approaches to consider.

  • Christianity in Japan

    Christianity in Japan

Christianity is very much a minority religion in Japan at present. We estimate that between 0.2% and 0.5% of Japanese have fully embraced the gospel, which makes the Japanese among the least-reached major people groups in the world.
