  • Our mission
  1. What we do
  2. Our mission

Our mission

Japan Christian Link equips, mentors and encourages Christians to reach Japanese around them. Our missionaries, partners and volunteers also share the gospel with Japanese through full-time church work, “tent-making” mission work or informally with friends and colleagues – both in Japan and overseas. Indeed, work amongst overseas Japanese has always been one of our key focuses. In the UK the number of ministry centres continues to grow and we are also actively involved in the Japanese Christian community across Europe. We have links in a number of other countries and we have a clear vision to work wherever Japanese people may be found.

Returning to Japan

If you are, or know, a Japanese person who became a Christian while abroad and is now returning to Japan we can help with advice or information on finding a church or Christian fellowship in Japan that suits. It can be hard for those who came to faith overseas to find and settle into a good church or make Christian friends, but we have a network of contacts who may be able to help.

Literature

We stock the UK's widest selection of Japanese Christian literature, useful for Japanese outreach and discipleship or simply as gifts – see our online shop for details.

Japan Weekend Conference

Our annual Japan conference is a key event, bringing together people from all over the UK and beyond with an interest in mission to the Japanese. Typically around a quarter of those who attend are Japanese and many talks are in Japanese (interpreted into English) or vice versa – see our Japan Conference page.

In Japan

The long established work in Japan continues to be known as the JEB, or Nihon Dendoutai, and is now under the direction of our Japanese colleagues with whom we work in close cooperation. Learn about some of the JEB churches and the areas they are seeking to reach. We also have a number of JCL mission workers serving in Japan today.

Our approach

We are interdenominational, with many of the main Christian traditions represented, and we are international, with workers from several different countries, including Japan itself, working among Japanese in the UK and in Japan. We are also inclusive, seeking to work with other missions as well as working on our own. Unusually, our vision specifically includes building and encouraging a network of part-time volunteers, ordinary Christians reaching out to Japanese expatriates in their local area. Opportunities for involvement include full-time roles (both short & long-term) in Japan, UK or elsewhere, volunteer roles, prayer and financial support, please contact us for more information.

Sharing the gospel with my Japanese friend

It can be challenging to explain the gospel to someone from a completely different culture, who also has a different mother tongue! Here are a few approaches to consider.

  • Christianity in Japan

    Christianity in Japan

Christianity is very much a minority religion in Japan at present. We estimate that between 0.2% and 0.5% of Japanese have fully embraced the gospel, which makes the Japanese among the least-reached major people groups in the world.
